Consulting and commercialisation

It is important for academics and researchers to be looking to use their expertise and innovations to make returns to the society that supports them, through consulting and commercialisation.

The School is, in fact, at the forefront of commercialisation activities within the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences, with a number of staff having already signed research contracts with industry, or having successfully commercialised intellectual property through spin-off companies.

Consulting

Consulting can include anything from hiring out your expertise for several hours or days, to the negotiation of an agreement which may require you to work on a specific project for several months or years.

In either case there are many things to take into consideration before going down this path; for example, intellectual property issues, how much to charge for your services, whether to set up a contract or not, the level of infrastructure to be included in the fee, what you and the school get out of it.

Commercialisation

If you have an idea or innovation which you would like to commercialise, contact the School Manager in the first instance to discuss where you're at with your idea and what still needs to be done.

Andrew Beveridge or Andy Sierakowski in the Office of Industry and Innovation (OII) are also available to help in the intial stages. A number of grants are available to help you get started, including the Pathfinder Fund (UWA), pre-seed fund and comet grant (AusIndustry).

Don't have any industry contacts? Not a problem!
The OII has a network of industry partners with whom they can put you in touch. They will even search for an industry partner for you if they don't already know someone. You could also try searching the International Linkages Database Service (ILDS) to find contacts.
