This introductory course appraises the present understanding of the basic structure and dynamics of the atomic nucleus. The current scientific studies of the nucleus face formidable challenges both experimentally and theoretically, because of the size, energies and forces involved. As yet there is no fundamental understanding of the nature and the complex properties of the very strong forces that hold the nucleus together in the sub-microscopic domain. Some of the remarkable experimental findings of the properties and dynamics of the nucleus find wide application in science, medicine and engineering. Topics covered include the mechanism of and applications of radioactivity of unstable nuclei, nuclear magnetic resonance, nuclear fission and fusion.
