HISTORY OF THE PHYSICS DEPARTMENT
of
THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

John L. Robins

Preface

The Department of Physics (in the form of a Department of Mathematics and Physics) was one of the original five Departments that comprised The University of Western Australia when it was founded in 1913.  To my knowledge, no attempt has yet been made to compile a history of the Department and this has prompted me to begin to gather together those written records that remain from the past 92 years.

It is my intention to present the information as it comes to hand, in a series of Issues.  These Issues will be posted here on the School of Physics website, for general perusal, and I hope they will be both interesting and informative to those who read them.  Eventually they will be gathered together into a coherent and more conventionally structured History of the Physics Department.

I urge readers to please inform me of any errors of fact.  I would also appreciate receiving, or being directed to, new information on any aspect of the history of our Department which has recently been renamed as the School of Physics.

I can be contacted by e-mail at robins@physics.uwa.edu.au.  I can also be contacted by mail or messages sent through the School of Physics office.
